About this listen

In Lisa Gardner's second short story, after the New York Times bestseller The 7th Month, Detective D.D. Warren takes on her most intimidating assignment yet: a fifty-minute class meant to educate a horde of bloodthirsty thriller writers on the ways of actual police work. Yet sometimes life really does imitate fiction, as D.D. takes the writers through the reality of one of her most twisted cases - a case that involves a seedy motel room, drugs, prostitution...and a severed leg.

With Gardner's trademark suspense, sharp observations, and thrilling storytelling, 3 Truths and a Lie is a fascinating chapter in D.D.'s storied career.

A Great Lunch Date!

I gave this a four out of five stars because I did not know it was only an hour and forty minutes. Ok my bad. But that is the reason for the review. One hour and forty minutes is a great lunch date with a salad and water. It is that good. Tell your boss you will need a long lunch... or don't just come back late. But you will not be able to put this down until the end.

You don't get the day-to-day grind of DD Warren but Gardner can tell a riveting short story. Don't make the same mistake as I did and assume this will be a long unfolding story with the whole gang. But don't think this is not worth the credit because it is... A Great Lunch Date or a friend to take with you to your doctor's appointment.

Worth the credit.

short stories are such a tease

Short stories are such a tease, short by definition, no character development and they leave you wanting more. With this book defined as #7.5 in the DD Warren series we have the rest of the series to satisfy our appetites. On to book #8 in the series I will go, which does have great reviews.

In this short story, DD goes from Boston to Wisconsin to speak at a crime writer's seminar. I've seen these get togethers advertised so I know they exist. Lisa Gardner likely attends them and probably presents. In this story, DD isn't sure what she's going to talk about until she walks out on the stage and only then decides to describe one of her most gruesome murder cases. She challenges the crowd to figure out the three truths about crime solving in the story as well as the one lie she will present. I didn't get the lie although it made sense at the end. Being a short story, this was a quick listen.

Boston Detective D. D. Warren lectures...

...crime novel authors at a conference. This one hour short story is about one of Warren's cases. She engages her audience to get their input on what she should have done next at each point in the case. Kirsten Potter does her normal great job of narration. The short story is free at Audible. The short story is followed by the first two chapters of Find Her, the D. D. Warren thriller to be released on Feb. 9, 2016.

Witty and Clever

Detective Sergeant D. D. Warren is asked to do a presentation to a group of thriller writers about police procedure. When she turns and faces the room, D. D. abandons her plan and decides to tell a story about a recent, bizarre case and ask the group to figure out the three truths and a lie.

I’m not a fan of novellas but this one was pretty clever. It’s too short for me to provide more details without spoiling it for other readers but what I can share is I was just as engaged as the group in that conference room and enjoyed how she singled out some of my favorite, real life authors. I attempted to guess the answers, too, and the narrator brought a level of wit that made this fun.

Interesting but maybe not worth it

The story was interesting as as always by Lisa Gardner, very well written. However, the length is only 1 hour and 20 minutes, the last 20 minutes are prologue to the next novel. So although it was very good, I don’t think I would pay as much as I did to listen had i known how short it would be.
