SERVE for SUCCESS

The audiobook shines in the last chapters, bringing a new concept of the game—serving. It’s true that only with empathy, good listening, and humility can one achieve most because projects are done by other people than project managers.

Become a leader in project management

I knew the difference between a manager and a leader. But I was surprised that this is more critical in projects than in other management fields since a PM spends over 80% of their time communicating. I recommend this audiobook to anybody who wants to level up the game.

Always communicate

Project managers spend most of their time communicating. So a project manager has to master communication skills, whether it’s negotiation, active listening, or persuasion. The book does a great job of describing these.

Close tasks early and lead the team

Projects tend to slow down over time, get more problems, and complicated. The book develops techniques to address these symptoms.

The checklists

The audiobook comes with two checklists that make it outstanding. Both of them are practical and can change a lot in our PM game.

Lead a project of any size

Generally, I think the book fits very well with professionals and non-project managers who lead their initiatives and private projects. I lead many initiatives and process improvements that can be managed as little projects. I cooperate with people, and there, the leadership skills come into play. The author offers all leadership, interpersonal and communication skills that are essential for project management. I particularly liked advanced problem-solving skills. I struggled with certain conflict situations, but the advice to classify them per category helped me view them differently and apply an effective method. This book also gave me answers to why most projects did not succeed in our company. The author presents the essential skills a project manager needs and how they can improve the culture, gain support from the sponsor, stakeholders, and team members. I liked the tips for closing tasks quickly and preventing scope creep. Understanding team members (bits of psychology) and being your team's best fan are the first stepping stones for an efficient team. The narration is superb!

A project leader = CEO

I like the comparison of a project leader to a CEO because both are indeed leading an organization to a strategic goal. This is done with people and teams. As the author declares, you have to take and manage risks, get your hands dirty, keep the direction and be able to make unpopular decisions. This is an excellent resource for managers.

NEW PERSPECTIVE

I have gone through many books on project management, and they describe techniques and tools, such as planning, executing, monitoring, Gantt chart, WBS. However, this one is exceptional as it focuses on interpersonal skills and gathers together all that you will need to become successful.

Negotiation is key

I was surprised with many details about negotiation. I am not a strong person and do not win many battles. The audiobook provides many details and advanced strategies on negotiation, how to prepare and deal with opponents. The negotiation checklist is a great bonus. Other parts of the book were also superb.

The importance of management culture

I work in a company where the project management culture is not developed. I was delighted that the author included broader topics such as the culture and sponsor. Today, both factors are considered more critical than the skills of the project manager. Peter (the hidden author behind Ready Set Agile) describes how to gain people, improve the culture and sponsor, and develop them.
