About this listen
George Orwell's nineteen Eighty-Four is one of the most definitive texts of modern literature. Set in Oceania, one of the three inter-continental superstate that divided the world among themselves after a global war, Orwell's masterful critique of the political structures of the time, works itself out through the story of Winston Smith, a man caught in the webs of a dystopian future, and his clandestine love affair with Julia, a young woman he meets during the course of his work for the government. As much as it is an entertaining read, nineteen Eighty-Four is also a brilliant, and more importantly, a timeless satirical attack on the social and political structures of the world.

Story

The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor. Included on the recording are several shorter works. The Ainulindalë is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabêth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age.

A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.

Remarkable! Bravo!
I can’t believe it took me so long to read/listen to this classic. I guess I felt I “knew” what it was about, and that was sufficient.
Well - it was insufficient!
This book deserves every measure of being considered a classic. It goes to the heart of the sort of tyranny that plagues our modern world. It’s haunting. The plot moves brilliantly, both expectantly and surprisingly.
We know how it will end, but we are really not sure.
The model of control seems extremely powerful. How could it ever be broken? Orwell anticipates the weakness of every other ugly system that has tyrannized mankind, and he makes sure the Party here and “Big Brother” bests them all.
It scared me. A lot. And I guess that’s what was intended.
The reader was quite good.
Highest marks here!!!!

The narrator did a great job
One of the classic referenced book by many that is a must read. Talks about a dystopian world in which Winston- the main character lives in. Where you are constantly watched and have no freedom to even think thoughts that does not agree with the state. No pleasures are permitted such as love. Where history is manipulated in the ministry of truth. Torture takes place in the ministry of love. And war is planned in the ministry of peace. The slogans of the ruling party WAR IS PEACE , FREEDOM IS SLAVERY , IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

Prescient and Scary for its applicability to today
This book lays out like a roadmap for the modern democratic big government party. They have clearly applied many of Orwell’s described techniques attributed to the “Party”. Double Think and Double Speak, revisionist history, removing and destroying statues and references to the past, intolerance of any opposing viewpoints, collusion with social media, print and television media to control the narrative and canceling (read: vaporizing) of conservative opinions, a radial militant arm of the party (BLM and Antifa) that do their dirty work for them, desire for absolute control of the populace and conformity with their ideas (mask and vaccine mandates), etc. The list could go on and on. But like any Marxist or totalitarian government, the promises of a Utopian society result in scarcity, shortages and terror for the general population while the elite few prosper. Big Brother is watching you…

Must-Read for Anyone Politically Minded
Absolutely chilling, Orwell was a psychological genius ahead of his time. This is the absolute worst case scenario for human society, and this book isn't afraid to beat you over the head with its message of the complete bleakness of a world under total control, powered by nothing but hatred.
May's performance seemed stilted at first, but as the book goes on, his matter-of-fact, presentative style of dictation ends up perfectly conveying the book's themes. Everyone should read this book.

Required Reading
I would say that you, no matter who you are, need to listen to this book. Do not imagine yourself as the hero Winston. Do not imagine your opposition as Big Brother. Read this book with the idea that this is the future of your side. That once you win the culture war, your people take control and become this nightmare. Then, with that perspective, seek to abolish all totalitarianism from your beliefs.
Performance was fantastic, but had multiple editing errors. Words would cut off prematurely or begin half way through. Editing issues aside, easily worth the pennies you can often buy it for.

Timeless
As I read this book, I asked myself - how could I have waited this long to read it? Putting that question aside, it doesn’t matter if you read this in 2000, 2010, 2024, 1984, 1942 - you’d see parallels of modern life documented in this incredible book. I loved every moment of this experience and could not recommend this more.
