Роман Маргарет Митчелл "Унесенные ветром" ("Gone with the Wind") - роман с непростой историей создания, смешением литературных жанров и всемирной известностью. Создание романа началось в 1926 году с написания последней главы и главной - финальной фразы всего произведения: "Она не сумела понять ни одного из двух мужчин, которых любила, и вот теперь потеряла обоих". Затем потекли часы работы над книгой, за столиком для рукоделия, на паучьих ножках, чередующиеся с часами, проведенными в библиотеке. Митчелл писала, работая то над одной, то над другой главами, без привязки к их последовательности в романе. Окончив работу над главой, она укладывала ее в огромный конверт из плотной манильской бумаги и укладывала конверты друг на друга в стопку, на полу возле своего стола. Так постепенно, в гостиной образовалась кипа из отпечатанных Маргарет страниц. В конце 1927 года, стопа конвертов выросла почти в стол высотой, а к концу 1928 года на груде из конвертов можно было вполне комфортно, словно на кушетке, расположиться гостю дома. В последствии, Маргарет Митчелл признавалась в одном из своих писем писателю С. Янгу, что каждую главу своего романа она переписывала по десять-двенадцать раз, после чего откладывала ее на месяц, чтобы взглянуть на написанное свежим взглядом и еще раз исправить то, что казалось неудачным.
