モーリス・ルヴェルはフランスの作家。「フランスのポー」と言われ、恐怖や悲哀を主題とした残酷物語の短編を多く残しています。日本においても新青年等に翻訳紹介され、探偵小説の読者を熱狂させたほか、江戸川乱歩、夢野久作、小酒井不木などに絶賛されました。乱歩は「淋しさ、悲しさ、怖さがルヴェルの短編の随所に漂っている」と言い、久作は「探偵小説で一番好きなのはルヴェルとポーだ」と言っています。またラヴクラフトは自身のエッセイの中でルヴェルを絶賛し、アメリカと日本でのルヴェルの認知に多く貢献しました。現在新たな翻訳が出版され、母国フランスや日本においてルヴェルの評価が再認識されています。©2022 PanRolling
