夏目漱石、前期三部作のひとつであるこの作品。作品の書かれた「近代」において自我に目覚めた主人公の代助は、倫理や道徳に背き、正直に、自由に生きようとした。そしてその代助を待ち受けたものは。一生懸命生きようとする代助の姿は、「現代」でも「未来」でも色褪せることはないだろう。

寝ぼけ署長シリーズの巻頭を飾る作品です。山本周五郎というと武士や江戸庶民の様子を描いた人情物ですが、この作品の時代は現代です。それでも山本周五郎らしい人情がたっぷり詰まった作品になっています。
