World War Diary

In 1997, on the 98th birthday of my Grandad George, he passed me his personal diary of his time in the army in the first world war. In the diary, George details his time in the battle of the Somme, and the adventures and trauma he endured. In the diary, George details fighting in battle in the tanks, saving others, and his amazing friendship with Richard and Simon which helped to boost his morale during the army. In the diary, George details his bravery and battle to return home to achieve his dream to become a doctor.

For over 35 years, my Grandfather’s World War I memoirs lay in a battered tin box at the back of various storage cupboards in my grandparents’ and then my parents’ homes. When I finally found them, I knew they were too valuable to sit in the dark, unread; I wanted to share my Grandfather’s words with everyone.
