Tracks: Memoirs of a Vietnam Veteran is the amazing true story of a young boy in high school who decides to become a United States Marine, knowing he would go to Vietnam. This book describes boot camp and infantry training. He is placed in tanks, something he had never dreamed of serving in. He then ventures on a Mediterranean cruise. He becomes a sergeant and a tank commander and is sent to Vietnam. His first full day in Vietnam almost became his last.

When Israel “DT” Del Toro, Jr.'s Humvee rolled over a roadside IED in Afghanistan, he had one thought as he lost consciousness: I have to keep the promise I made to my dad. On November 12, 1971, Bernard Patterson, a much-decorated Vietnam War hero, turned a real-life version of Don Quixote, Butch Cassidy, and Robin Hood all rolled into one package, robbed the Northern National Bank in Mars Hill, Maine. He escaped with $110,000; at the time, the largest bank robbery in the history of the state.

For decades, the dramatic stories of World War II soldiers have been the stuff of memoirs, interviews, novels, documentaries, and feature films. Yet the men and women who served in less visible roles, never engaging in physical combat, have received scant attention.

Volumes 1 and 2 of Combat Veterans’ Stories of Small Wars and Nation Building present 20 autobiographical stories of men and women that were in fire fights, raids, and other dangerous situations that exposed them to enemy ordnance. Their stories give listeners an understanding of warfare, as the US military has experienced it since the Vietnam War.

For 24 years, I've brought American veterans from all over the United States to high schools in Oregon to share their military experiences during times of war with the students. Over the years, as I became friends with many of these veterans, they began to open up and share with me. Many veterans refused to talk for years, but reached out to me as they grew older and realized they wanted their stories remembered. Even their spouses and children had never heard many of these shared stories.

In November 1942, Paul Andrew Kennedy (1912-1993) boarded the St. Elena in New York Harbor and sailed for Casablanca as part of Operation Torch, the massive Allied invasion of North Africa. As a member of the US Army's 2nd Auxiliary Surgical Group, he spent the next 34 months working in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany, in close proximity to the front lines and often under air or artillery bombardment. He was uncomfortable, struck by the sorrows of war, and homesick for his wife.

Their stories needed to be told. And classmates working together, under a blanket of trust and friendship, was the only way to allow people to open up. It was a three year journey into the hearts and souls of America's youngest heroes to gather these important historical accounts, but it was worth every hour spent. Inside this book are the voices the first Annapolis graduates into a decade of war and they remind us that America is in good hands. They were walking to class on 9/11, wearing Naval Academy summer working blues, when the towers were struck.

It took her many decades to write the book, because she wanted the book to be a blessing to many people, male and female, who have served their country and not been recognized.

"Jim, why don't you apply to become an FBI agent?" Those words, said to me while serving as a young police officer in the spring of 1969 by my chief of police Perry Larson in River Falls, Wisconsin, started my journey. "Me, an FBI agent?" I always thought them to be, if I thought of it at all, some nebulous characters from New York or Chicago. They certainly weren't farm kids from central Wisconsin. This began an amazing 28-year journey and love affair with the greatest law enforcement agency in our country, the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was beyond my wildest dreams.
