Travel Adventure Writing

The following is a selection from three books that were published in 1894, 1910, and 1905 respectively by early pioneers who ventured into Tibet. They are Among the Tibetans, India and Tibet, To Lhassa at Last. Although as Westerners their perspectives are culturally bounded (and too often myopic), they each write vividly and occasionally with great insight about what they experienced in their travels. Sadly, however, two of the narratives are militaristic and we witness an unwanted invasion on behalf of the British to gain controlling interest in the region.

Book 14 of the Tom Swift series, Tom Swift and His Wizard Camera, finds our hero, the young inventor Tom Swift, approached by a moving picture distributor, Mr. Period, to not only invent a better motion picture camera, but to take his airship and film exciting events. Off to Africa go Tom, Ned Newton, Mr. Damon, Mr. Nestor, and the friendly giant Koku to film wars between the natives, fights between the animals, and stampedes of the elephants. Of course our hero does not let him down.

Nature is excessive, lovely, and ominous in the Solomons and the Melanesians who live there, often blond or redheaded, are the blackest of all people. Before World War II such names as Guadalcanal, Savo, Munda were rarely heard. Guadalcanal, over 100 miles long by 30 miles wide, is the largest island.
