Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson take on the case of Mr Avery Quill, whose daughter has mysteriously disappeared. The investigation has hardly begun when her body is discovered, and Mr Quill is himself murdered in the same manner. The killer leaves visiting cards emblazoned with the head of the gorgon at the scenes of his crimes, and Holmes connects these to a strange club known as "The One Hundred per Cent Society". He learns little there, except that the members are all outcasts from noble families.

After the marriage of Jane and Mr. Bingley, Lizzie is invited to stay with them at their estate in London. She plans on meeting with Mr. Holmes again, in hopes of working another case. Holmes and Watson are handed the challenge of solving the London Tarot Murders, a dark episode which, to quote Dr. Watson's in his memoirs, "occupies a lofty place in the annals of all black deeds ever committed in the long memory of the ancient, regal city, higher even than the infamous affair with the Ripper."

Where Sherlock Holmes tends to go, then surely a crime must be detected. What begins as a chance encounter of a seemingly simple mystery at an Edinburgh home soon takes Holmes and Watson into conflict with the Edinburgh Police, an investigation involving murder and corruption, and crossing paths with the local populace including Dr. Joseph Bell.

Rebus is off the case - literally. A few days into the murder inquiry of an Edinburgh art dealer, Rebus blows up at a colleague. He is sent to the Scottish Police College for 'retraining' - in other words, he's in the Last Chance Saloon. Rebus is assigned to an old, unsolved case, but there are those in his team who have their own secrets - and they'll stop at nothing to protect them. Rebus is also asked to act as a go-between for gangster 'Big Ger' Cafferty.

At Edmund Brooke's insistence, his 10-year-old daughter, Vitorina, leaves the closed world of her old and strait-laced great-aunts and their Portuguese mansion - complete with chapel - and journeys to a boarding school in England.
