August Wilson wrote a series of ten plays celebrating African American life in the 20th century, one play for each decade. No other American playwright has completed such an ambitious oeuvre. Born Joel David Katz to a wild and wooly Jewish American family in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1932, Joel Grey began his life in the theater at the age of nine, starting in children's theater and then moving to the main stage.
