Spanish History

New Mexico's Spanish legacy has informed the cultural traditions of one of the last states to join the union for more than four hundred years, or before the alluring capital of Santa Fe was founded in 1610. The fame the region gained from artist Georgia O'Keefe, writers Lew Wallace and D. H. Lawrence, and pistolero Billy the Kid has made New Mexico an international tourist destination.

Contrary to what schools taught, it was the Spanish who first arrived at Canada's West Coast. They found gold near present day Hedley and made off to the coast. The gold was buried present day University of British Columbia, where it has yet to be found. This is the story of how it got there, and the attempts to locate it over the years.

In July 1776 a pair of Franciscan friars, Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante, were charged by the governor of New Mexico with discovering a route across the unknown Southwest to the new Spanish colony in California.
