In late 1936, as Franco’s armies stormed toward Madrid, Stalin famously termed the defence of Spain “the common cause of all advanced and progressive mankind.” As a German emigrant to Winnipeg, Hans Ibing recognized the importance of the Spanish Civil War to the struggle against worldwide fascism in a way that most people in Canada did not - joining the International Brigades in their fight to defend the Spanish Republic was his “chance to fight Hitler.”

“As long as the world will last, not one will speak in France about Catalonia without remembering terrible things...” 1285 AD: the kingdom of Aragon is under threat. Philip the Bold, king of France, is poised to invade with a massive army. The French have the blessing of the pope. They intend to conquer Aragon and place Philip's son, Prince Charles, on the vacant throne. Hopelessly outnumbered, King Peter of Aragon calls upon his Almogavars to defend the kingdom. These rough warriors, farmers and shepherds, are sent to guard the mountain passes against the invading host of crusaders. ...

Try to imagine the city of Malaga is to be evacuated overnight. A total of 150,000 people will have to walk 200 kilometers along the coastal road in search of a safe refuge while being pursued by Italian tanks, bombed by German aircraft, and shelled by Rebel Nationalist ships. Many will be too weak to reach the safe port of Almería and will only survive because an ambulance and a Canadian doctor come to help. A doctor who will later be accused of spying and betrayal and will be unwillingly pushed out of Spain by the very people he had come to assist.

In the 1930s, women and men from across Britain, Europe and America made their way to Spain to be part of what they identified as a historic fight for freedom from fascism. Tomorrow Perhaps the Future follows a handful of extraordinary outsiders who were determined to live out their lives with courage and conviction.

Madrid, 1936. In a city blasted by a civil war that many fear will cross borders and engulf Europe - a conflict one writer will call "the decisive thing of the century" - six people meet and find their lives changed forever. Ernest Hemingway, his career stalled, his marriage sour, hopes that this war will give him fresh material and new romance; Martha Gellhorn, an ambitious novice journalist hungry for love and experience, thinks she will find both with Hemingway in Spain.
