Der Held des Romans Petschorin, nennt sich Böse und begreift nicht, wieso das Böse eine so große Anziehungskraft besitzen kann. Der Ich-Erzähler des Romans trifft immer wieder auf Petschorin und kann so auch sein Tagebuch lesen. Er ahnt, dass es nicht die Anziehungskraft des Bösen, sondern die Verzweiflung ist, was diesen Mann nicht abstoßend, sondern bemitleidenswert und faszinierend zugleich erscheinen lässt.
