Tendo como ponto de partida o falecimento do protagonista e o seu velório, esta novela narra a vida de Ivan Ilitch até seus momentos finais. Após construir uma carreira como juiz de instrução na burocracia russa, casar-se por conveniência e formar uma família, Ilitch alcançou uma posição confortável. No entanto, é surpreendido ao adoecer gravemente, o que revira sua existência, obrigando-o a confrontar a sua condição como mortal e a falta de sentido de sua vida.

Notes from Underground, also translated as Notes from the Underground or Letters from the Underworld, is an 1864 novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Notes is considered by many to be one of the first existentialist novels. It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man), who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg.

Kholstomer is a work by Leo Tolstoy that has been referred to as "one of the most striking stories in Russian literature". It was started in 1863 and left unfinished until 1886, when it was reworked and published as Kholstomer: The Story of a Horse. This story prominently features the technique of defamiliarization by adopting the perspective of a horse to expose some of the irrationalities of human conventions. Kholstomer's altruistic life is recounted parallel to that of his selfish and useless owner. At the end of the story horse dies but his corpse gives birth to a new life - that of wolf cubs.
