"Le manteau" appartient au recueil des "Nouvelles de Pétersbourg", publié en 1843. Ce court texte raconte l'existence simple, limitée, mais heureuse d'un petit fonctionnaire russe, Akaki Akakiévitch Bachmatchkine. Lorsque ses collègues lui font remarquer l'usure de son manteau, pour la première fois, Akaki est sensible aux critiques mesquines et quotidiennes de son entourage, et il se met en tête d'économiser sou après sou pour s'offrir un nouvel habit. Chèjov nació el 29 de enero de 1860 en Taganrog y estudió medicina en la Universidad Estatal de Moscú. Casi no ejerció su profesión debido a su éxito como escritor y porque padecía tuberculosis. Casi a finales de siglo conoció al actor y productor Konstantín Stanislavski, director del Teatro de Arte de Moscú.
