Water covers the vast majority of the planet, and people have looked upon the oceans for thousands of years with a mixture of awe and fear. In 1820 the slave ship Antelope was captured off the Florida coast. On a snowy morning in January 1910, the Alaska Steamship Company's Farallon struck Black Reef in Cook Inlet. The vessel carried no wireless radio to broadcast an SOS.
