Senecas "Von der Kürze des Lebens", verfasst im 1. Jahrhundert nach Christus, ist eine eindringliche Reflexion über die Art und Weise, wie wir unsere Lebenszeit nutzen–oder verschwenden. Seneca mahnt uns, nicht der Illusion zu erliegen, das Leben sei zu kurz. Ganz im Gegenteil: Wir vergeuden es mit Nebensächlichkeiten, Ablenkungen und falschen Prioritäten.

The Symposium is a Socratic dialogue by Plato, dated c. 385 – 370 BC. It depicts a friendly contest of extemporaneous speeches given by a group of notable Athenian men attending a banquet. The men include the philosopher Socrates, the general and statesman Alcibiades, and the comic playwright Aristophanes. The panegyrics are to be given in praise of Eros, the god of love and sex. In the Symposium, Eros is recognized both as erotic lover and as a phenomenon capable of inspiring courage, valor, great deeds and works, and vanquishing man's natural fear of death.

Sokrates befindet sich gerade auf dem Weg zur Akademie, als Hippothales ihn anhält und ihn bittet, mit ihm in die neu errichtete Palästra zu kommen, um nähere Bekanntschaft mit jenem Jüngling zu machen, in den er, Hippothales, ganz offenkundig schwer verliebt ist. Der Name des Jünglings: Lysis. Bereitwillig folgt Sokrates dem Verliebten und macht in der Palästra die Bekanntschaft mit eben jenem Lysis, aber zudem auch mit dessen Freund und Kameraden Menexenos.

Marcus Aurelius was a Roman Emperor, the last of the "Five Good Emperors", and one of the most important Stoic philosophers, along with the slave Epictetus. Marcus Aurelius wrote the "Meditations" while in a military campaign; it was a series of notes written for no one but himself in his quest for self-improvement.
