Ce texte fondateur du philosophe épicurien de la Grèce Antique qui regroupe poésie et philosophie se présente comme une tentative de "briser les forts verrous des portes de la nature", c'est-à-dire de révéler au lecteur la nature du monde et des phénomènes naturels. Selon Lucrèce, cette connaissance du monde doit permettre à l'homme de se libérer du fardeau des superstitions, notamment religieuses, constituant autant d'entraves qui empêchent chacun d'atteindre l'ataraxie ; la tranquillité de l'âme.

Scaevola, vieillard et augure, rapporte à Cicéron une conversation tenue avec Laelius et Fannius sur l'amitié. Cicéron écrit alors un traité où se mêlent dialogues et récits sur le sens que doit avoir l'amitié, et la conduite qu'elle dicte aux hommes qui se réclament d'elle. Ce texte, écrit en 44 avant J.-C., s'inspire de la philosophie stoïcienne, d'Aristote et de Théophraste, et montre toute la force et la vertu qu'il y a à nourrir et choyer ses amitiés.

The Tao Te Ching is a Chinese classic text traditionally credited to the 6th-century BC sage Lao Tzu. The text's authorship, date of composition, and date of compilation are debated. Lysis is a dialogue of Plato which discusses the nature often translated as friendship, while the word's original content was of a much larger and more intimate bond. Sokrates befindet sich gerade auf dem Weg zur Akademie, als Hippothales ihn anhält und ihn bittet, mit ihm in die neu errichtete Palästra zu kommen, um nähere Bekanntschaft mit jenem Jüngling zu machen, in den er, Hippothales, ganz offenkundig schwer verliebt ist. Der Name des Jünglings: Lysis. Bereitwillig folgt Sokrates dem Verliebten und macht in der Palästra die Bekanntschaft mit eben jenem Lysis, aber zudem auch mit dessen Freund und Kameraden Menexenos.

Meno is a Socratic dialogue written by Plato. Meno begins the dialogue by asking Socrates whether virtue is taught, acquired by practice, or comes by nature. In order to determine whether virtue is teachable or not, Socrates tells Meno that they first need to determine what virtue is. When the characters speak of virtue, or rather arete, they refer to virtue in general, rather than particular virtues, such as justice or temperance.

The Meditations is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD, which records his private notes to himself and his ideas on Stoic philosophy. A major theme of Meditations is the importance of analyzing one's judgment of self and others and the development of a cosmic perspective.
