The smiling Buddha, or the Buddha of laughter, was a vagabond monk in the 10th cenury. Known as Pu Tai in China and Hotei in Japan, he found supreme happiness one stormy day under a bridge after a loud thunderclap illuminated his purpose. From that day forward, he traveled throughout China sharing his wisdom with laughter and good humor.

Little is known about the origin of The Basket of Flowers, except that it is translated from the French by someone known only as J.H. St. A. The value of this excellent volume lies in its content, which is thoroughly God-honoring and scriptural.

What does it mean to be a child of God? We are told in scripture that followers of Jesus Christ are a member of the royal priesthood. We are told that we have been adopted into God’s family. We are told that we are a joint heir with Jesus Christ. We are told that we are loved by God as he loves all of his family. Yet, we often, and even most often, are reluctant to fully accept our adoption. We accept our salvation. But we do not accept the intimate love of our Father in heaven.
