The Book of Genesis opens the Hebrew Bible with the story of creation. God, a spirit hovering over an empty, watery void, creates the world by speaking into the darkness and calling into being light, sky, land, vegetation, and living creatures over the course of six days. Each day, he pauses to pronounce his works "good" (1:4). On the sixth day, God declares his intention to make a being in his "own image," and he creates humankind (1:26). He fashions a man out of dust and forms a woman out of the man's rib.

Through an exploration of the Book of Kings, and close study of the kings and prophets, we can learn valuable lessons, both political and personal, that apply today. The Book of Kings is a tragedy, the story of the decline and fall of the ancient kingdom of the Jews. From its height in the days of David and Solomon, to its division into Israel and Judah, and to its final defeat by Assyria and Babylonia, the Israelite monarchy faced constant challenges. The genre of the book of Esther is Narrative History. Its author is anonymous however; some believe Mordecai, (Esther's cousin and guardian), wrote it. After Joshua's death, the tribes of Israel continue their conquest of the southern regions of Canaan, but they are unable to cleanse the land thoroughly of its native inhabitants.
