Today, Alexander Graham Bell is remembered almost solely for one of the few things he didn't have in his laboratory: the telephone. In this essay, Emma Goldman expresses her opposition to women’s suffrage, as she was opposed to all forms of government. She disagreed with the argument of many suffragists that women's participation would clean up a corrupt political system. Women's suffrage, Goldman believed, would at best be irrelevant and at worst, it would divert attention from more important issues.

The Complaint of the Poor Commons of Kent was a manifesto issued by Jack Cade in 1450. He was a rebel from the county of Kent. This list of grievances was presented to King Henry VI during the rebels’ march on London.

In her essay "The Tragedy of Woman’s Emancipation", Goldman argues that the notion of woman’s emancipation seems to reinforce social antagonism brought about by existing interests. She claims that, in light of the reorganization of social life based on the principles of economic justice, the artificial boundary lines between men’s and women’s rights would disintegrate into a perfect whole.

She states that patriotism is a superstition created by a network of lies and falsehoods that robs a man of his self-respect and dignity. In 1872, during a fight along the Yellowstone River between U.S. troops protecting railroad workers and Sioux warriors, one of the Sioux did something both unusual and inspiring. At the height of the battle, with bullets whizzing all around him, this warrior sat down, loaded his cannupa (sacred pipe), and began to smoke, partaking in his people's religious sacrament. For the Sioux, smoking a pipe was akin to praying, and the smoke, wafting up through to the heavens, represented those prayers as they floated up to Wakan Tanka, the "god" of the Native Americans who occupied the North American Plains.
