New England Ghost

Up until recently, Freeman has been known primarily as a "feminist" writer, for her classic stories like "A New England Nun", and "The Revolt of Mother". However, she also wrote many well crafted supernatural stories which have only recently begun to attract appreciative critical attention. These stories combine pragmatism and supernaturalism and are very much in the tradition of an "Americanized" Gothic.

This story is about Jeffery Bloom, a self-made multi-millionaire. Who steps out of his normal life, of drug making and distributing, to buy a castle in the English countryside. It was bought sight unseen by Mister Bloom’s agent, and Jeffery finds himself at the front door at ten at night knocking with his knuckles on a solid hard wooden door. With little light, he failed to see the pull-cord for the chimes, that would alert the house of his presence. The limo driver, in the meantime, thinking the place looked spooky, wasted no time after dropping off Mister Bloom’s luggage on the front ...
