Native American West

In 1836, John McGregor, a Scottish and Seminole half-breed, kills a white man in Florida. The crime is worse, when the man turns out to be an army sergeant. Self-defense is no excuse. McGregor is angry - angry with God, the maker and taker of breath, and angry with the red man as well as the white. Among the Indians, this rage earns him the name "One Who Gives No Chance".

The Mapps, a fiercely independent Native American family, fight back as government agencies ignore treaty agreements and try to exert control over Mapp family land. Nick Delgado, a young wildland firefighter for the Bureau of Land Management, searches for his own place in a world that teeters between alien and achingly familiar. Faced with the driest fire season on record, the Mapps must place their trust in a government less than honorable, while Nick struggles with regulations and familial expectations to become the man he needs to be.
