Depuis Louis XV, aucun chef d’état n’a gouverné aussi longuement la France que Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, président de la République de 1848 à 1852 et empereur de 1852 à 1870. Et pourtant, durant des décennies, il n’a guère eu les faveurs du public ni celles des historiens, rebutés par le coup d’état de décembre 1851 et par la défaite de 1870 contre la Prusse. Un tel passif explique pour une bonne part que le neveu de Napoléon Ier a été rejeté, moqué et détesté, tout en restant méconnu.
