Der Grieche Epiktet (ca. 50-130) lebte in Rom und war einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der späten stoischen Philosophie. Das "Handbüchlein der Moral", auch "Encheiridion", war sein bekanntestes Werk und fand in der Spätantike als Trostbuch eine starke Verbreitung. Der Wille sei so zu gebrauchen, dass Harmonie mit dem Weltlauf erreicht wird.
