Military Italy

Alla Grande Guerra si guarda oggi da una nuova prospettiva che privilegia la storia culturale e sociale. A tale approccio originale guarda questo libro per raccontare l'esperienza italiana nel contesto dell'apocalisse globale del 1914-18. Facendo ricorso a un ventaglio vastissimo di fonti, dagli archivi ufficiali alle fotografie private, dalla memorialistica alle cartoline illustrate, il volume mette a fuoco tre aspetti essenziali della guerra italiana: l'attesa del conflitto e la mobilitazione prima del 1915.

Berlin, September 1944. Ulrich von Hassell, former ambassador to Italy and a key member of the German Resistance, is executed for his part in an assassination plot against Hitler. In response to the attack, Himmler, leader of the SS, orders the arrest of all the families of the plotters. In a remote castle in Italy, von Hassell's beloved daughter, Fey, is discovered just when she thought she had escaped the Nazi net. She is arrested, and her two sons, ages three and two, are seized by the SS.

No city on earth has preserved its past as has Rome. Visitors stand on bridges that were crossed by Julius Caesar and Cicero, walk around temples visited by Roman emperors, and step into churches that have hardly changed since popes celebrated mass in them 16 centuries ago. These architectural survivals are all the more remarkable considering the violent disasters that have struck the city. Afflicted by earthquakes, floods, fires and plagues, it has most of all been repeatedly ravaged by roving armies.

As Sicily fell and the Allies prepared to press on, Italy’s fascist dictator, Benito Mussolini, was actually arrested to prevent him from doing further damage. Il Duce still held considerable power in the eyes of many ground-level activists, and if left unchecked, the possibility of violence in the streets was genuine. He was jailed in Campo Imperatore on August 28, 1943, on one of the largest mountains in Central Italy, but when the new Italian government surrendered to the Allies, most of the Italian mainland was still controlled by the Germans.

When the Italian dictator Mussolini saw that Hitler was conquering Europe, he decided that he too would have a share of the plunder. He declared war on the Allies, vowed to control the Mediterranean, and with his 300,000 troops stationed in Libya, take Egypt and the Suez Canal. But he knew that this could not be accomplished while the strategic island of Malta remained in Allied hands. For the next two years Malta and its people suffered for almost continuous bombardment, but never gave in.

Nel maggio 1915 l'Italia si prepara a entrare in guerra. Quando nel giugno 1941 Hitler scatenò l'"operazione Barbarossa" contro l'Unione Sovietica, avrebbe fatto volentieri a meno dell'aiuto italiano; l'Italia, aveva scritto a Mussolini, avrebbe giovato di più concentrando il suo impegno in Nordafrica. Ma Mussolini voleva esserci a tutti i costi, e fece costituire il Corpo di spedizione italiano in Russia (Csir), che a metà luglio partì per il fronte orientale. Un anno dopo, unito a nuovi corpi d'armata nell'Armir (Armata italiana in Russia), fu schierato sul Don.

Dopo le Leggi razziali del 1938, la famiglia Di Segni continua a vivere a Roma ma nel 1943 capisce che i rischi sono aumentati. Il figlio diciottenne Pacifico Franco viene messo al riparo sui tetti dell'Ambasciata di Francia con altri ragazzi. Lì resterà fino all'aprile del '44.
