The Korean War was a 20th Century conflict that has never ended. Though it’s widely overlooked today, the U.S. has had a military presence in Asia for more than 200 years. The East Indies Squadron was formally established by President Andrew Jackson in 1835 to protect American property and trade in Asia, but U.S. warships were protecting American interests in Asia before then. In fact, American merchant vessels reached China as early as the 1780s.

In the last months of the Korean war the US Marines had transitioned into a near stationary force manning the main battle line in a serious of forward outposts. A newly married Methodist minister, Larry Zellers, was serving as a missionary and teacher in a small South Korean town near the 38th parallel when he was captured by the North Koreans on June 25, 1950. Until his release in 1953, Zellers endured brutal conditions and inhumane treatment. Through his story, Zellers shows that, despite the opinion that POWs live only for themselves, many in the camps worked to help others and conducted themselves with honor.

At midnight on January 24, 1954, the last step was taken in the armistice to end the war in Korea. That night, the neutral Indian guards who had overseen the prisoner of war repatriation process abandoned their posts, leaving their charges to make their own decisions. The vast majority of men allowed to choose a new nation were Chinese and North Koreans who elected the path of freedom. There were smaller groups hoping that the communist bloc would give them a better life.

Towards the end of the Korean War, 28 American soldiers were inserted into the conflict on a hill, with a company of ROK troops, that is now inside the Demilitarized Zone on the Korean Peninsula. They were on a secret mission to test 'battlefield radar' for the first time, which eventually gave GIs the ability to spot the enemy and direct fire on the battlefield, providing a significant advantage during the war. Shortly after arriving, thousands of Chinese soldiers overran their position.

Snipers in the guard towers would fire at them. North Korean patrols would shoot at them from across the MDL. The North Koreans would even cross the MDL to assault a patrol. They then hightailed it back across to avoid return fire. The rules of engagement allowed Dennis to return fire inside the DMZ. He had to cease fire once they crossed back over the MDL. There were provisions that did allow engaging combatants across the border. All that was needed was permission from higher up. By the time it took to get permission, it was too late. The North Koreans knew the firing rules that patrols had to follow. They would use them against our forces every opportunity they could.
