All'indomani dell'armistizio, l'8 settembre 1943, oltre seicentomila italiani rifiutarono di continuare a combattere nelle file dell'esercito tedesco. Molti di loro furono deportati nei lager nazisti. Gli IMI, gli "Internati militari italiani", furono inizialmente trattati come prigionieri di guerra, al pari degli altri soldati alleati catturati, ma presto la ritorsione del Reich li sottrasse alle garanzie previste dalla Convenzione di Ginevra. Per l'esercito dell'Asse erano traditori. Li attendevano sofferenze, privazioni e, soprattutto, la totale disumanizzazione.

The 1942 raid on Dieppe was an attempt to test the enemy readiness, and take some pressure off the Russian front. It was a costly disaster, but lessons learned there were of the utmost importance to the D-Day planning. After a massive build up of men and materials, the D-Day landings finally took place in Normandy on June 6th, 1944. Despite vicious battles and stubborn resistance, within 12 weeks the Allied forces invaded Paris.

In the late summer of 1943, when Italy changed sides in WWII and the Germans, now their enemies, occupied the north of the country, an Italian Resistance was born. Ada, Frida, Silvia, and Bianca were four young Piedmontese women who joined the Resistance, living secretively in the mountains surrounding Turin. They were not alone. Between 1943 and 1945, as the Allies battled their way north, thousands of men and women throughout occupied Italy rose up and fought to liberate their country from the German invaders and their Fascist collaborators.

The ideology that was carried out in the vicious Spanish War right before World War II, and was embraced by Nazi Germany, was actually pushed and more or less invented by the Italians during a critical time in history when many changes were made, and when fear and uncertainty were in the air. Dopo le Leggi razziali del 1938, la famiglia Di Segni continua a vivere a Roma ma nel 1943 capisce che i rischi sono aumentati.
