Military Diaries

During the Second World War, across the frontline as well as on the Home Front, millions of people recorded their thoughts of their experiences - whether in letters, their personal diaries or those prosecuting the war giving speeches. Much as Letters of Note celebrated the great letters written through history, so Words of War allows the Imperial War Museum to showcase its incredible array of first-hand material to shine a light on how people journeyed through the 1939-45 conflict.

These letters, in the form of a frank and amusing diary, were written by a private in Wellington's army who fought throughout the Napoleonic Wars. Private Wheeler's record covers the Peninsular Campaign, keeping order during the coronation of Louis XVIII (whom he called 'an old bloated poltroon') and his later posting to Corfu.

In 1918, Gerald Condon was a 20 year old American Private training as a Signalman before serving in France. By World War 2 he was a 20 year veteran of the Buffalo, NY Police Department when he re-enlisted to "finish what we started 25 years ago". When he shipped out for England in 1944 he was engaged to Ann Lyden the widowed Grandmother of Jerry Lyden. Excerpts from his letters home are included and are read in the voice of Ann Lyden. This role is voiced by Irene Dennis. The young Gerald is voiced by Padraic Harrison. Jerry Lyden reads the words of his grandfather, Gerald Condon.

The Greatest Generation is the firsthand account of an English soldier who began his army career with the Long Range Desert Group in 1940, raided with David's Sterling's Special Air Service, volunteered for the 1st Airborne Division, and took part in their first ever jump. He then transferred to the 6th Airborne in 1943 and with them he dropped at Pegasus Bridge, battled the Bulge, jumped the Rhine, and fought through Northern Germany to meet the Russians on the Baltic Coast, where they celebrated together with vodka.

This Diary of the Second World War has been able to cover all facets of the conflict and is a fundamentally empirical work, which narrates events as they occurred, rejecting value judgments, and therein lies its value: It is an insurmountable encyclopedia published now as an audiobook.
