곽재식은 누구보다도 재미난 이야기 소재들을 사랑하는 작가입니다. 비단 SF뿐만 아니라 동서양의 판타지와 전설 등, 현실 밖의 꿈과 상상과 환상 속에 담긴 이야기들을 찾고 수집하죠. 다루는 소재를 고려하면, 곽재식은 확실히 '장르 소설가'에 속합니다. 전형적이라고 할 수도 있겠죠. 하지만 이 작가는 특별합니다. 현재 장르 소설계에서 이렇게 웃긴 작가는 존재하지 않습니다. 특히 이공계를 졸업하고 사회에 진출한 사람들이 겪는 부조리한 사회생활에 관한 블랙 코미디는 타의 추종을 불허합니다.

로맨스 소설의 고전이자, 19세기 초 영국에서 유행한 고딕 소설로도 평가 받는, 여성 작가 샬럿 브론테의 대표작. 책은 가난한 고아 가정교사 제인 에어와 부유하지만 불행한 에드워드 로체스터의 사랑 이야기가 작품의 중심축을 이루고 이들의 사랑을 방해하는 장애물이 주된 갈등으로 작용한다. 작가는 자매들과 함께 다녔던 기숙 학교의 기억과, 비련으로 끝나고 만 사랑의 경험을 작품 속에 녹여낸다.

소설집의 처음을 여는 「그들을 정원에 남겨두었다」에서 의사인 '나'는 소설가이기도 하다. 이시진은 내가 담당하고 있는 식물인간 상태의 환자인데, 그는 과거에 커밍아웃하면서 부인과 딸을 떠났었다. 10여 년을 함께한 그의 동성 연인은 병원에 찾아왔지만 어떤 관계도 인정받지 못한 채, 이시진의 가족들에게 쫓겨나야 했다. 한편 나의 대학 동기인 수연은 그 상황을 텍스트로 풀어내며 생활동반자법 제정이라는 공론을 이끌어내려 하지만, 그 과정에서 사실을 과장하고 각색한다. 나는 수연에게 전화를 걸어 그 글은 픽션이 아니라고, 쓰기 전에는 최소한 동의는 구했어야 했다고 비판하지만, 되레 수연이 되받아친다.

낡은 단독주택의 하숙 일을 도우며 사는 대학생 '서주'는 어느 날 집주인 할머니가 지옥에 월세를 줬음을 알게 된다. 지옥 리모델링 기간 갈 데가 없는 죄수 일부를 이 집에서 지내게 했다는 것. 집 곳곳에서 비명이 들리고 불꽃이 타오르며 방문이 열릴 때마다 보이는 지옥의 모습은 익숙해지지 않는다. 그나마 얼마 남지 않은 멀쩡한 세입자들은 방을 빼는 가운데 서주는 지옥의 관리자라 자칭하는 악마를 마주치게 된다.
