Since the publication of her prize-winning memoir, Craft for a Dry Lake, writer and artist Kim Mahood has been returning to the Tanami desert country in far north-western Australia where, as a child, she lived with her family on a remote cattle station. The land is timeless, but much has changed: the station has been handed back to its traditional owners, the mining companies have arrived and Aboriginal art has flourished.

A thriving fur trade post between 1830 and 1860, Fort Clark, in what is today western North Dakota, also served as a way station for artists, scientists, missionaries, soldiers, and other western chroniclers traveling along the Upper Missouri River. The written and visual legacies of these visitors have long been the primary sources of information on the cultures of the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians, the peoples who met the first fur traders in the area. He focuses especially on the force of human impact on megafauna—mammoths, whales, and the North American bison. Ultimately, he argues, it is the critical assessment of ideas of human exceptionalism that provides a necessary counterpoint both to apologies for human mastery over nature and deep ecology's attempts to erase the human.

The Cherokee are among the native tribes of the United States' Southeastern Woodlands. They resided in communities along river valleys in what's now southwestern North Carolina, southeastern Tennessee, the limits of western South Carolina, northern Georgia, and northeastern Alabama just before the 18th century. Cherokee belongs to the Iroquoian language family. One oral legend tells of the people moving south in age-old times from the Great Lakes area, where other Iroquoian-speaking tribes were based, according to James Mooney, an early American ethnographer.

Stories define us. They tell us who we are or, at least, who we think we are. The American story of westward expansion draws upon heroic tales of courage and perseverance and the "pioneer spirit". But settlers and their descendants also spread false narratives about Indians in order to justify ruinous private and public acts. The stories we heard and the tales we hear even now give people cover to behave abominably. And this abominable behavior has economic effect.

How the West Was Drawn explores the geographic and historical experiences of the Pawnees, the Iowas, and the Lakotas during the European and American contest for imperial control of the Great Plains during the 18th and 19th centuries. David Bernstein argues that the American West was a collaborative construction between Native peoples and Euro-American empires that developed cartographic processes and culturally specific maps, which in turn reflected encounter and conflict between settler states and indigenous peoples.

I made this book from the data I collected. All around me when I was young healthy-looking people older than me with native American characteristics were losing limbs because of the "Sugar disease". I mentally noted it but only paid it attention one night after work I ate a lot of fruit... I mean a lot. That night I ran to the bathroom multiple times and experienced extreme thirst. So I drank everything in the fridge that morning before work (Orange Juice, Milk, etc).
