ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಲೇಖಕ ಎಸ್.ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ 'ನಾಯಿ ನೆರಳು' ಒಂದು ಅಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಮನೋರಂಜಕ ಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ೨೪೦ ಪುಟಗಳಿರುವ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಲೇಖಕರು ಕೇವಲ ಮೂರು ವಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದು ಮುಗಿಸಿರುವುದಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ತಿರುಮಲ ಜೋಯಿಸರಿಗೆ ಅವರ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಗರ್ಭಿಣಿಯಾಗುವ ಕಾಲ ದಾಟಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮಗ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವನು ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಚೀರಿ ಮೂರ್ಚೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಅವನ ತಾಯಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಎಂದೂ ಎಚ್ಚರ ಆಗುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಬೆಳೆದು ದೊಡ್ಡವನಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಂತೆ ಈ ಹುಡುಗ ತನಗೆ ಮದುವೆಯಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳ ತೊಡಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಬೇರೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳೊಡನೆ ಬೆರೆಯದೆ ಇದ್ದಕ್ಕಿದ್ದಂತೆ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ನಾಯಿಯ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಅವಿರತವಾಗಿ ಜೊತೆಗಿರತೊಡಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆ ನಾಯಿಯ ನೆರಳು ಎಂಬಂತೆ ಬೆಳೆಯ ತೊಡಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.
