Hamlet virðist láta undan brjálæðinu og hyggur á hefndir frænda síns, sem hefur nýlega kvænst móður hans. Verandi hugulsamur í eðli sínu, ákveður hann að setja upp leikrit sem er byggt á kringumstæðunum sjálfum í þeirri von að frændi hans muni í kjölfarið gefa sig fram.
