The short story "Colonel Sterett's Panther Hunt" is a rumination by a cattleman on his experiences with mountain lions, which he calls “panthers.” The spelling of words deviates from the conventional, and is based on the pronunciation of the narrator.

A man is hired by a British gentleman because of his strength, his medical degree, and his extreme knowledge of beetles.

"The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in 8 Fits" is usually thought of as a nonsense poem written by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) in 1874, when he was 42 years old. It describes with infinite humour the impossible voyage of an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature. The poem borrows occasionally from Carroll's short poem "Jabberwocky" in "Through the Looking Glass" (especially the poem's creatures and portmanteau words), but it is a stand-alone work, first published in 1876 by Macmillan.

Isobel Violet Hunt was born on 28th September 1862, in Durham. As a young child her family moved to London and Hunt was brought up amongst the Pre-Raphaelite circle of artists. As a historical document, this audiobook is far more entertaining than it has a right to be. It's a wonderful, funny, sad peek into the emotional agonies of a sexual era that is happily past. Or is it? You won't know quite whether to laugh, cry, or thank Dr. Wakely for his almost criminally Victorian little 1846 book. Despite stating that it was "for sale by all booksellers", one wonders who would have the nerve to make such a purchase in 1846.
