Lovecraft est l'un des maîtres du fantastique et de la science-fiction. Il doit certainement à son enfance malheureuse l'inspiration de son œuvre. Alors qu'il n'a que trois ans, son père est interné dans un hôpital psychiatrique où il décédera des suites de la syphilis, maladie dont sa mère est également atteinte. A 13 ans, Howard rédige une première nouvelle fantastique. Un bref séjour à New York lui donne l'occasion, à travers le cercle d'amateurs de fantastique qu'il fréquente, de publier un premier récit.

B.J. Harrison reads one of Edgar Allan Poe's classic short stories "The Masque of the Red Death".
