Engelsmannen Henry Masham är på semester i Italien. Avsikten är att det ska vara avkopplande, men han blir snart utsatt för ett mordförsök. Upplevelsen traumatiserar honom svårt, men han träffar tur nog den trevliga men ytterst excentriske Lord Ruthven. De bestämmer sig för att slå följe och resa vidare tillsammans genom Italien. Wells from the late 19th century, providing the reader with a most unusual enemy.
