Did you know that O. Henry's real name was William Sydney Porter? He had many pseudonyms, but is mostly known as O. Henry. He wrote over 300 stories and is known for playfully writing a twist at the end. Most of them are based in New York, with characters being an average Joe. A census at the time stated there were about four million individuals living in NYC at the time, and that is how this volume of short stories received its name.

Originally published in a 1892 edition of Strand Magazine, "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" was one of 12 short stories to be included in the first Sherlock Holmes collection, the 1892 The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Scrooge, an old miser, is "a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner". He hates Christmas, calling it "humbug". The tale begins on a "cold, bleak, biting" Christmas Eve in London, exactly seven years after the death of Scrooge's business partner Jacob Marley. At home that night, Scrooge is visited by Marley's ghost, who is forever cursed to wander the earth dragging a network of heavy chains, forged during a lifetime of greed and selfishness.
