History Myths

This unit plan provides an introduction to Native American Literature for high school students. Students are encouraged to make cross-cultural connections as they analyze the stories, answer questions, and write essays. The author of this publication will contribute one hundred percent of the proceeds that he receives to a scholarship for high school students or to a charity.

Five centuries before Kamehameha the Great, Kalaunui was the first person to attempt uniting all the islands under one rule. Much of what is known of the Norse myths comes from the 10th century onwards. Until this time and for centuries afterwards, Norse culture (particularly that of Iceland, where the myths were eventually transcribed) was an oral culture. In fact, in all Scandinavian countries well into the 13th century laws were memorized by officials known as “Lawspeakers” who recited them at the “Thing.” The Thing was the legislative assembly in Scandinavia “held for judicial purposes".

Patrick Hunt has been teaching in Humanities at Stanford University for the past 20 years. His Ph.D. is from the Institute of Archaeology at University College London, University of London in 1991. He is a National Lecturer for the Archaeological Institute of America since 2009 and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society since 1989. National Geographic Society has sponsored some of his archaeology fieldwork. He appears frequently on PBS, NOVA, National Geographic and History Channel broadcasts.
