Die Highlands 1889. Als der junge Erbe der betuchten Familie Koloman eine Todesdrohung erhält, reisen Inspector Frey und sein Kollege McGray unverzüglich zum nebelverhangenen nördlichen Zipfel des Landes. Dort, am abgelegenen Loch Maree, kommen sie im unheimlichen Herrenhaus der Kolomans unter. Die nahegelegene Insel ist von Fledermäusen befallen, und jeder der Bewohner scheint etwas zu verbergen. Als kurz darauf ein grausamer Mord im Wald geschieht, ist den Ermittlern klar: Um die Geheimnisse des mysteriösen Loch Maree zu wahren, geht jemand über Leichen.

London 1889. Nach der Aufführung von "Macbeth" wird eine mit Blut geschriebene Botschaft aufgefunden: In Edinburgh, der nächsten Station der berühmten Theatertruppe, soll jemand grausam zu Tode kommen. Der Fall ruft die Inspectors Ian Frey und Adolphus McGray auf den Plan. Während der vernünftige Engländer Frey die düstere Ankündigung für reine Publicity hält, ist McGray von einem übernatürlichen Phänomen überzeugt, da Besucher eine "Todesfee" vor dem Theater gesehen haben wollen.

Neujahr 1889. In Edinburghs berüchtigter Irrenanstalt ermordet ein gefährlicher Psychopath eine Krankenschwester. Kurz bevor ihm die Flucht gelingt, unterhält er sich mit einer jungen Patientin, die seit Jahren kein Wort gesprochen hat. Wieso hat sie ihr Schweigen gebrochen? Sind die Gerüchte von schwarzer Magie wahr, die in den Fluren der Anstalt kursieren? Inspector McGray geht der Fall sehr nahe, denn die junge Frau ist seine Schwester. Zusammen mit seinem Partner Ian Frey verfolgt er den Mörder durch das ganze Königreich - bis zum Pendle Hill, Sitz der gefürchteten Hexen von Lancashire.
