Einar Már Guðmundsson er en af Islands største nulevende forfattere. Han debuterede i 1981, og havde sit folkelige gennembrud med romanen "Universets Engle" (1993) som modtog Nordisk Råds litteraturpris. I "Hundedage" spejler Guðmundsson gennem nutidens prisme den dramatiske tid i slutningen af 1700-tallet og begyndelsen af 1800-tallet. Tiden for den franske revolution, historiens største vulkanudbrud og Islands første og eneste konge: "Hundedagskongen" Jørgen Jürgensen, en dansk kaperkaptajn, som i 1809 gennemførte et statskup på Island.

En 1792, la guerre entre la France et l'Autriche éclate.
