His life was one devastating blow after another, losing multiple family members over the years to suicide, growing up in foster care, and being bullied. How does one pull themselves out of a storm like that? Surviving Loss: My Journey of Hope follows a man who often has reason to ask Why me? Many people ask themselves the same question when life pummels them, but this is a story of hope and coming out the other side, of recognizing the gifts and blessings between the pain and struggle.

I lost my dad five years ago, and have been chronicling my journey from the start, from loss to grief to, unfortunately for me, depression. I've tried my absolute best to put my thoughts and feelings onto paper for this process, with the hope that someone, somewhere, can find value in it. It's been a tough old road; there's no denying that. And my search for a meaningful way forward has led me to writing this book. I hope it can help those who need it.

The Reverend Doctor Herbert F. Brokering, pastor, author, lyricist, speaker, and hymn writer of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), died Nov. 7 of congestive heart failure at his apartment in Bloomington, Minn., according to his son, Mark. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America news service says in its report, "Brokering, 83, was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Bloomington."
