Few philosophers have so extensively influenced thought and language as Aristotle. His conception of the universe pervades Christian theology. Knowledge of his thought is necessary to understand Bacon, Galileo and the modern scientific view of nature, as well as Dante and many passages from Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Milton. Laws is Plato's last and longest dialogue. It is generally agreed that Plato wrote this dialogue as an older man, having failed in his effort in Syracuse on the island of Sicily to guide a tyrant's rule, instead having been thrown in prison.

Plato explores the nature of knowledge through a conversation between Socrates, the young mathematician Theaetetus, and Theodorus, his teacher.

The "Apology" of Socrates by Plato, presents the speech of self-defence given by Socrates in his trial for impiety and corruption (399 BC).The "Apology" of Socrates is the dialogue that depicts the death of Socrates and is one of the four works, along with Euthphro, Phaedo, and Crito, through which Plato details the final days of the philosopher Socrates. There is, however, no real way of knowing how closely Socrates' words in the "Apology" match those of Socrates at the actual trial.

Perhaps the most important book in philosophy after the Allegory of the Cave. Incomparable logic and findings about the things that matter in life with a clear succinct prose touch.

In The Life of Cicero, Plutarch details the priceless contributions Cicero made to Roman society. He translated the works of Greek philosophers into Latin, gained acclaim as an orator and lawyer, and was elected to office. Politics ultimately got the better of him, however, and his life ended in assassination while in exile. Cicero’s ideas live on through his body of work, but to learn about the man himself, Plutarch’s biography is an excellent starting point.
