Epicteto foi um conferencista que não deixou escritos filosóficos. Felizmente, os aspectos principais de sua filosofia foram preservados para as gerações futuras por um de seus dedicados alunos, o historiador Flávio Arriano. Arriano transcreveu meticulosamente em grego um número considerável de palestras de seu mestre para um amigo. C'est un ouvrage accessible, souvent étudié en classe de terminale. "Ce qui trouble les hommes, ce ne sont pas les choses, mais les jugements qu'ils portent sur les choses. Ainsi la mort n'est rien de redoutable [...] mais le jugement que nous portons sur la mort en la déclarant redoutable, c'est là ce qui est redoutable."

Lysis is a dialogue of Plato which discusses the nature often translated as friendship, while the word's original content was of a much larger and more intimate bond. It is generally classified as an early dialogue. The main characters are Socrates, the boys Lysis and Menexenus who are friends, as well as Hippothales, who is in unrequited love with Lysis and therefore, after the initial conversation, hides himself behind the surrounding listeners.

Pupil of the great Plato, teacher of Alexander the Great, Aristotle is a massively influential figure in Western philosophy. Cicero described his literary style as "a river of gold". Modern ethics are based on his ideas about virtue; his writings literally encompassed all the scientific knowledge of the time and beyond, so much that many of his findings were still considered cutting-edge many century afterwards. Aristotle also shaped modern logic, and put his mark on all subsequent philosophy and theology.
