Gothic Classics

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) will forever be known as the author of one of the all-time great Gothic novels, Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus (1818). In 1824, she published her essay "On Ghosts", which offers a personal glimpse into her own opinions and experiences. This edition includes a new preface with historical context and an excerpt from M.G. Lewis' 1796 work The Monk: A Romance that Shelley references in "On Ghosts".

William Wymark Jacobs (1863 - 1943) was an English short-story writer. "The Monkey's Paw" is a classic horror story whose title refers to a shrunken monkey’s paw that is said to have the power to grant its possessor three wishes.

Northanger Abbey was the first of Jane Austen's novels to be completed for publication, though she had previously made a start on Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice.

Il romanzo, scritto nel 1881, è ambientato nel 1864 in un luogo non ben precisato, sulle rive di un lago lombardo. Il Palazzo è invece la villa Pliniana, sul Lago di Como, visitata da Fogazzaro, la cui atmosfera cupa si adattava all'ambientazione del romanzo. Il libro fu ignorato dalla maggior parte delle riviste letterarie ma lodato da Verga, che lo definì una delle più belle concezioni romantiche mai apparse in Italia. Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens, first serialised in All the Year Round from December 1860 to August 1861. The action of the story takes place from Christmas Eve 1812, when the protagonist is about seven years old, to the winter of 1840. Great Expectations is written in a semi-autobiographical style, and is the story of the orphan Pip, tracing his life from his early days of childhood until adulthood.

Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was born on August 28th, 1814, at 45 Lower Dominick Street, Dublin, into a literary family with Huguenot, Irish and English roots. Between 1838 and 1840 Le Fanu had written and published twelve stories which purported to be the literary remains of an 18th-century Catholic priest called Father Purcell. Set mostly in Ireland they include classic stories of gothic horror, with grim, shadowed castles, as well as supernatural visitations from beyond the grave, together with madness and suicide.

This chilling tale of one man’s descent into madness was published shortly before the author was institutionalized for insanity, and so The Horla has inevitably been seen as informed by Guy de Maupassant’s mental illness. While such speculation is murky, it is clear that de Maupassant—hailed alongside Chekhov as father of the short story—was at the peak of his powers in this innovative precursor of first-person psychological fiction.

The King in Yellow is a book of 10 classic short stories about the supernatural. The first four mention "The King in Yellow", a forbidden play which induces despair or madness in those exposed to it. The tales have a macabre undertone, focusing on characters that are inhabitants of the demi-monde.

In 1816, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley visited Lord Byron in Switzerland. After reading an anthology of German ghost stories, Byron challenged the Shelleys and his personal physician, John Polidori, to write horror stories of their own. Polidori was the only one to complete a story, and a good one, at that. Mary did come up with an idea though, and it became was the germ of Frankenstein.

Il dramma del Dottor Jekyll è quello dell'uomo che prova ad esplorare il suo lato oscuro e che, inevitabilmente, ne viene risucchiato...

L'assassino di un vecchio avvocato dopo aver commesso l'efferato omicidio, viene tormentato dal suono fantasma del cuore della vittima, smembrata e occultata sotto il pavimento. Durante un interrogatorio, proprio sul luogo dove è seppellito il pover'uomo assassinato, il cuore 'rivelatore' sospinge alla follia l'avvocato il quale fuori controllo confessa l'omicidio. Classico racconto del romanzo gotico, "Il cuore rivelatore" è considerato fra le massime espressioni dell'opera di Poe.

Scritto nel 1844 "Una storia delle Ragged Mountains" fa parte di una silloge chiamata "I racconti del terrore". Il protagonista, sotto l'effetto di una droga, sperimenta gli effetti di un viaggio nel tempo, ritrovandosi nel passato e in luoghi diversi, dall'America del 1827 all'India del 1780, dove viene coinvolto nella battaglia tra gli Inglesi e le popolazioni dell’India. Una Storia delle Ragged Mountains è considerato uno dei lavori migliori di Poe. Quest'opera fa parte della collana LibriVivi Palco.
