The Castle of Otranto is regarded as the first Gothic novel. The son of Manfred, Prince of Otranto, is mysteriously killed on his wedding day by a huge helmet. The event leads to a fast-paced story of jealous passion, intrigue, murder, and supernatural phenomena unfolding in an atmosphere of thunderclaps, moonlight, and dark castle walls, mirroring the inner turmoils of the characters themselves. Horace Walpole's tale, an immediate success when it first appeared in 1764, is a classic of its genre.

Romantics everywhere have been enthralled by Emily Bronte's classic novel of the tragic love between beautiful, spirited Catherine Earnshaw and dark, brooding Heathcliff. El Hombre de Arena (Der Sandmann) es el cuento más célebre de E.T.A. Hoffmann. Publicado en 1817 en sus Cuentos nocturnos (Nachtstücke), es el cuento más representativo del máximo autor del género del romanticismo negro (Schwarze Romantik, conocido también como literatura del terror gótico) durante el siglo XIX. El cuento relata la vida de un muchacho llamado, Nathanaël, quien está traumatizado por la muerte de su padre, que murió en muy extrañas circunstancias, ocurrida durante su infancia.

El narrador intenta convencernos de su salud mental, diciéndonos que lo único que le pasa es que es un poco nervioso porque todos sus sentidos están extremadamente sensibilizados. El anciano con el que vive tiene un ojo azul que está velado, al que nuestro narrador describe como un ojo de buitre. El anciano realmente le cae bien pero odia el ojo de buitre....Hasta tal punto llega a odiar ese ojo que se convierte en una obsesión enfermiza, que le hace imposible no pensar en otra cosa que no sea planificar el asesinato del anciano.

Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens, first serialised in All the Year Round from December 1860 to August 1861. The action of the story takes place from Christmas Eve 1812, when the protagonist is about seven years old, to the winter of 1840. Great Expectations is written in a semi-autobiographical style, and is the story of the orphan Pip, tracing his life from his early days of childhood until adulthood.

The King in Yellow is a book of 10 classic short stories about the supernatural. The first four mention "The King in Yellow", a forbidden play which induces despair or madness in those exposed to it. The tales have a macabre undertone, focusing on characters that are inhabitants of the demi-monde.

In 1816, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley visited Lord Byron in Switzerland. After reading an anthology of German ghost stories, Byron challenged the Shelleys and his personal physician, John Polidori, to write horror stories of their own. Polidori was the only one to complete a story, and a good one, at that. Mary did come up with an idea though, and it became was the germ of Frankenstein.

El extraño caso del doctor Jekyll y el señor Hyde es una novela escrita por Robert Louis Stevenson, que trata acerca de un abogado, Gabriel John Utterson, que investiga la extraña relación entre su viejo amigo, el Dr. Henry Jekyll, y el misántropo Edward Hyde. El libro es conocido por ser una representación vívida de un trastorno psiquiátrico que hace que una misma persona tenga dos o más identidades o personalidades con características opuestas entre sí.

The creature offers Guido a path of revenge – switching bodies for three days in exchange for the untold riches in the chest. Guido unfortunately fails to see a potential downside. Through skillful handling of the gothic motif of the doppelgänger, Shelley’s tale explores concepts that would eventually culminate into her masterpiece – Frankenstein.

"The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" is a gothic novella by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1886. It is about a London legal practitioner named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde. The novella's impact is such that it has become a part of the language, with the phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" entering the vernacular to refer to people with an unpredictably dual nature: outwardly good, but sometimes shockingly evil.

Robert E. Howard’s "Pigeons from Hell" is a chilling Southern Gothic horror tale blending supernatural terror with a grim, oppressive atmosphere. It follows two travellers, John Branner and Griswell, who become stranded in the deep South and take refuge in an abandoned plantation house, the decaying remnants of the Blassenville family estate. The house is eerily silent, save for the presence of strange pigeons roosting in the rafters.

El relato "El gato negro" se publicó por vez primera en el periódico United States Saturday Post, en 1843. El gato como símbolo del mal tiene una larga tradición en Occidente. En la supersticiosa Edad Media llegó incluso a representar a Satanás al visitar la tierra; era el animal de compañía de las brujas. En el romanticismo se puso de moda como animal literario por excelencia, por su aire misterioso, sus ojos relucientes y su aparente serenidad. El propio autor del relato, Edgar Allan Poe, tuvo en casa ese animal doméstico.
