Toute ma vie j'ai eu de la chance, beaucoup de chance, peut-être même trop de chance quand je pense à tous ceux qui n'ont d'autre choix que d'affronter la grisaille d'un quotidien désespérant et, souvent, douloureux. Ce n'est pas que les épreuves m'ont été épargnées. J'ai eu mon lot d'échecs professionnels et personnels. J'ai même l'impression d'avoir parfois dû payer un prix élevé au succès, et à la notoriété. Mais jamais, au grand jamais, je n'ai connu l'ennui.

So begins Gary Land in his Introduction to this audio version of the autobiography of Joseph Bates (1792-1872). The story first appeared as a series of 51 articles in The Youth's Instructor, a Seventh-day Adventist publication, between November 1858 and May 1863.
