Marie Antoinette's dramatic life-story continues to arouse mixed emotions. To many people, she is still 'la reine mechante', whose extravagance and frivolity helped to bring down the French monarchy; her indifference to popular suffering epitomised by the (apocryphal) words: 'let them eat cake'. Others are equally passionate in her defence: to them, she is a victim of misogyny.

Francis I (1494-1547) was inconstant, amorous, hotheaded and flawed. Yet he was also arguably the most significant king that France ever had. This is his story. A contemporary of Henry VIII of England, Francis saw himself as the first Renaissance king, a man who was the exemplar of courtly and civilised behaviour throughout Europe. A courageous and heroic warrior, he was also a keen aesthete, an accomplished diplomat and an energetic ruler who turned his country into a force to be reckoned with.

Louis XI, dit le Prudent, né en 1423 à Bourges, mort en 1483 au château du Plessis-lez-Tours, fut roi de France de 1461 à 1483. Son intense activité diplomatique, perçue par ses adversaires comme sournoise, lui valut de la part de ses détracteurs le surnom d'"universelle aragne".

Henri IV (1553-1610) fut roi de Navarre (Henri III de Navarre, 1572-1610) puis roi de France (1589-1610), premier souverain de la branche dite de Bourbon de la dynastie capétienne. Il était le fils de Jeanne d'Albret, reine de Navarre, et d'Antoine de Bourbon, chef de la maison de Bourbon, descendant du roi Louis IX et premier prince du sang.

France's most famous king, and Europe's longest serving, Louis XIV (1638-1715) is often viewed today as a symbol of royal extravagance and splendor.
