In 17th century Paris, a group of women who called themselves conteuses (female storytellers) came together to weave the very first fairy tales. One of them, Marie-Catherine d’Aulnoy, actually coined the term ‘fairy tale’ and some of these stories contain many familiar (and well-loved) elements that appear in tales like Rapunzel and Beauty and the Beast. Unfortunately, these women, and their tales, have mostly been forgotten to history. Women of the Fairytale Resistance uncovers seven of these writer’s biographies—and retells 12 of their original stories.

Published in 1791, Thomas Paine’s The Rights of Man defended the French Revolution’s values of freedom, equality, and brotherhood. He argued that a government based on justice ought to support mankind’s civil rights relating to security and protection, as well as the natural rights to life, liberty, and freedom of conscience. He also proposed plans for universal education, pensions, poverty relief, and social welfare in this classic work that was widely read across the West.

The Way to Wealth, an essay by Benjamin Franklin, is a collection of wisdom sayings and advice published in Poor Richard's Almanac from 1733-1758. These proverbs and sayings are woven into an ethical code advocating industry and frugality as a “way to wealth”, thereby securing personal virtue. It is presented as a speech given by Father Abraham to a group of people. Many of the phrases Father Abraham uses continue to be familiar today, such as "There are no gains, without pains", "One today is worth two tomorrows" and "Get what you can, and what you get, hold".

Written in 1776, this call to arms for the battle of Independence rings with true common sense as it did the day it was written. Offered here for a historical perspective, it makes for great listening and a reflection for contemporary times.

Common Sense by Thomas Paine (1737-1809), originally published anonymously (by "an Englishman") in Philadelphia on January 10, 1776. This revised edition was published on February 14, 1776. It had a great influence at the time, particularly with regard to the colonies becoming completely independent of Great Britain as well as bringing about the issuance of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress in July 1776.

Herman Melville was born in New York City on August 1st 1819, the third of eight children. At the age of seven, Melville contracted scarlet fever which was to permanently diminish his eyesight. At this time Melville was described as being 'very backwards in speech and somewhat slow in comprehension.' His father died when he was 12, leaving the family in very straitened times. Just 14, Melville took a job in a bank paying $150 a year that he obtained via his uncle Peter Gansevoort, who was one of the directors of the New York State Bank.

He was the greatest spy of the American Revolution - so much so, that at times, it was hard to tell if he was working for the British or the Americans.
