In the wake of the Roman Empire’s collapse, Italy found itself fractured. Among the Italians of the Middle Ages, the most famous - and controversial - man who sought to unify Italy was, somewhat fittingly, a Roman. Cola di Rienzo was a man whose life and actions have reverberated down the centuries, as his charismatic, yet unsuccessful dictatorship has spawned legends and comparisons with movements of later ages. La fortuna economica delle maggiori famiglie principesche di Roma è sempre nata grazie all'elevazione di un membro di quelle famiglie al trono di Pietro. Questo non si può dire invece dei Torlonia. Nessun di loro è diventato papa o cardinale, eppure la famiglia, il nome, lo stemma ebbero lo stesso splendore delle maggiori casate romane, non in virtù dello Spirito Santo, ma grazie allo spirito imprenditoriale, al senso degli affari, all'arte difficile e misteriosa di far quattrini con i quattrini.

24 marzo 1944: alle sette della sera la strage è finita. Non rimane che far saltare in aria la cava e murarne l'ingresso per coprire la terribile verità dei giustiziati. Circa 75 sono ebrei detenuti in base all'ordine generale di rastrellamento e in attesa di essere avviati a un campo di concentramento, molti sono prigionieri politici presi dalle celle di Regina Coeli, altri da via Tasso, altri ancora rastrellati per strada e numerosi sono detenuti per reati comuni.

9 maggio 1936: alle 22:30 il duce annuncia dal balcone di Palazzo Venezia "la riappropriazione dell'impero sui colli fatali di Roma". È l'apice del successo di Mussolini: finalmente può vantare il suo Impero, che "porta i segni indistruttibili della volontà e della potenza del Littorio romano". Sono passati pochi mesi dall'inizio della campagna d'Etiopia, quando il duce ha fatto il suo ingresso nelle competizioni coloniali, dettato da motivi di prestigio "nazionale" e di consenso interno.

L'Europa moderna, nata con le grandi monarchie, tra guerre, conflitti religiosi, contese dinastiche, crisi sociali, e cresciuta nel rigoglio delle lettere, delle arti e della scienza, e nella rete della rivoluzione industriale, questa Europa solo nel 1848 trova finalmente una voce comune e un sentimento condiviso: il desiderio di libertà dei popoli.
